Hunter Hogan

Hunter Hogan is a highly trained painter with a background in the art of tapestry weaving. She has studied art at the Norfolk Museum Art School, Old Dominion University, the Penland School of Crafts, and the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. Hunter received two painting scholarships to the Anderson Ranch Arts Center. She has executed numerous corporate commissions, including several for the Hyatt Regency of Beaver Creek, Colorado, the Chugai Upjohn Art Collection, Cantina Restaurant in Aspen, Colorado, West Allis Memorial Hospital, Sterling Drug, Inc., and Landmark Communications. Hunter has exhibited her work extensively throughout the United States, including in the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC.

Hunter began her career as a tapestry weaver and the influence of this experience on her immense, colorful canvases is evident. Hunter understands painting as a literal weaving together of layers of paint. This gives her works a poignant depth and resonance for the viewer, as though the painting is a foggily remembered landscape that lurks layers below the canvas’ surface. Her paintings use nature as a point of departure for romantic meditations, recollections, and explorations of color, line, pattern, and shape. Hunter’s paintings establish a rhythm and flow that create an atmosphere distinct from the surrounding world—an escapism grounded in the primal realities of nature.

About the Series

My Images are grounded in nature, prompted by a visual reaction. I am reveling in the rich changing colors of the coastal environment. My painting is a connection to an inner narrative, a way for me to distill my feelings with color and form. By using expressions of color and form, it is possible for me to transcribe a memory and reconstruct a perception. There is an emotional resonance to be engaged with on the canvas and I keep working it until it has enough rhythm and flow to become its own atmosphere. I am searching for my own language to convey my own alternate reality.
